We rarely think about our body shape when choosing a bag. Yet the bag is an integral part of the silhouette: its size, its shape and the height at which it is worn draw the eye to certain areas, balance others, visually lengthen or widen. Exactly like the cut of a pair of trousers or the length of a coat.

This article from our "Buying guide" series explains how to choose a handbag suited to your body shape, to flatter your silhouette rather than unbalance it. It goes further than our article which handbag size to choose.

1. The three principles to remember

First principle: proportion. A bag should be in proportion to your build. On a petite figure, a very bulky bag seems to overwhelm the body; on a tall or curvy figure, a tiny bag can look lost. The bag should accompany the silhouette, neither dominating it nor disappearing.

Second principle: the focal point. The bag draws the eye to where it is worn. Worn at the hip, it emphasises the hips; worn under the arm or in the hand, it draws the eye to the bust or the upper body. So choose the carrying height according to the areas you want to highlight or minimise.

Third principle: contrasting shapes. A bag with straight, structured lines brings structure to a rounded silhouette; a bag with soft shapes softens a very angular silhouette. It is a simple rule that works very well.

2. A silhouette (hips wider than shoulders)

If your hips are wider than your shoulders, the aim is to draw the eye towards the upper body and avoid adding volume at hip level. Choose bags worn high: by hand, in the crook of the arm, or short under the arm. A top-handle bag or a baguette bag worn under the arm is ideal.

On the other hand, avoid long cross-body bags that fall right at hip level and visually widen them. If you love cross-body bags, shorten the strap so the bag sits at the waist.

Our top-handle bags NINA or LUMIA, carried by hand, or LAYOUN, worn short on the shoulder, are particularly well suited to this silhouette.

3. V silhouette (shoulders wider than hips)

If your shoulders are wider than your hips, the aim is the opposite: bring the eye downwards and balance the silhouette. Bags worn at the hip, cross-body or on the shoulder with a longer strap, are ideal: they create volume at hip level that balances the shoulders.

Rounded, soft shapes (bucket bag, hobo, half-moon) also soften strong shoulders. Avoid very structured bags worn under the arm, which add volume to the bust and shoulders.

The PAULINE bucket bag, the HALFMOON half-moon or a cross-body bag like NOÉMIE, worn at the hip, are excellent choices. To wear them well, reread our article on the women's cross-body bag.

4. H, O and X silhouettes

The H silhouette (shoulders, waist and hips aligned) benefits from creating the illusion of a defined waist. A cross-body bag worn at the waist, which "draws" a horizontal line, or a bag with rounded shapes that adds curves, works very well. HALFMOON, with its half-moon shape, or EMY, a cushion shape, are perfect for this.

The O silhouette (volume concentrated around the stomach) benefits from medium bags with clean, structured lines, carried by hand or on the shoulder rather than cross-body across the stomach. A rectangular bag like LISA or a semi-rigid one like SIMEON adds structure.

The X silhouette (balanced shoulders and hips, defined waist) can carry practically any bag. Just keep it in proportion with your build and highlight the waist, for example with a bag worn at that height.

5. Height, build and figure

Beyond body shape, height matters a lot. Petite women benefit from small to medium bags worn high, which lengthen the silhouette; very large totes tend to overwhelm them. We will devote a full article to them in this series.

Tall women, on the contrary, can easily carry generous sizes, which balance their silhouette, as well as long cross-body bags. A mini bag alone can look a little lost, unless it is deliberately worn as a contrasting accessory.

Curvy figures are flattered by medium to large bags with clean lines, in quality materials that hold their shape. Bags that are too small create an unflattering contrast. To find the ideal size, browse our handbags collection.

Conclusion: the bag, a silhouette ally

Choosing a bag according to your body shape relies on three simple principles: respect proportions, choose the carrying height according to the areas to highlight, and play on contrasting shapes. A silhouette: bag worn high. V: bag worn at the hip. H: a bag that defines the waist. O: clean, structured lines. X: almost everything suits you. Above all, remember that these rules are guidelines: the bag you love and carry with confidence will always be the most flattering. To refine your choice, reread our guide how to choose a handbag.
